Frequently Asked questions

If you’ve never experienced Reiki before, you may have a few questions about what happens, what you might experience and whether Reiki is right for you.

There’s no need to know anything about Reiki before you arrive. And there’s certainly no need to believe in anything in particular.

Here are some of the questions I’m asked most often.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle Japanese complementary therapy that is commonly used to support relaxation and overall wellbeing. During a session, you remain fully clothed while I use gentle hand placements on or just above the body. You can find out more about Reiki, and how it can help you, on my Home page.

Do I need to believe in Reiki?

No. You don’t need to have a particular belief system or spiritual practice to experience Reiki. You’re welcome to approach it simply as an opportunity to slow down, rest and receive some uninterrupted time for yourself. You don’t have to believe anything for a session to be worthwhile.

What happens during a Reiki session?

We’ll begin with a brief conversation so I can understand how you’re feeling and whether there’s anything you’d like me to be aware of. You’ll then get comfortable, usually lying on a treatment table, fully clothed.

The session itself is quiet and restful. I use a series of gentle hand placements, either on the body or just above it, depending on your preference. There is nothing you need to do. You can simply close your eyes, relax and let yourself be looked after for a while.

Will I remain fully clothed?

Yes. You remain fully clothed throughout your Reiki session. I recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows you to relax easily. There is no need to change into anything special.

Will you touch me?

Reiki can be provided with gentle hand placement on the body or with the hands held just above the body. Your comfort and consent are important to me. We can discuss this before your session and you can let me know what you are and aren't comfortable with. You are always welcome to ask for something to be changed during your session.

What might I experience during Reiki?

Everyone responds differently. Some people describe feeling warmth, tingling, heaviness or a sense of deep relaxation. Some become very still or sleepy, while others simply enjoy having some quiet time without needing to think about anything. You may notice emotions coming to the surface, or you may notice very little at all.

There is no particular experience you are supposed to have. There is no right way to experience Reiki.

What if I fall asleep?

That's absolutely fine. In fact, if you fall asleep, I’ll take that as a sign that you were comfortable enough to let yourself properly rest. You don't need to stay awake or try to "do" anything during your session.

What if I don't feel anything?

That's fine too. Not everyone experiences noticeable sensations during Reiki, and you don't need to. A Reiki session isn't a test and there is nothing you need to achieve. You can simply enjoy the opportunity to pause and rest.

What if I become emotional during my session?

You’re welcome to bring whatever turns up with you. Sometimes, when we finally have a quiet space and don't have to keep everything together, emotions can surface. If that happens, there is no judgement and no expectation that you need to explain yourself. We can pause, talk, sit quietly or simply allow you some space.

You don't have to hold everything together here.

How many Reiki sessions will I need?

There isn't a set number of sessions that everyone needs. Some people come for a single session when they feel they need some time to pause and reset. Others choose to come regularly as part of their approach to wellbeing. If you're unsure, we can talk about what you're hoping to get from Reiki and decide what feels appropriate for you. I won't tell you that you need a particular number of sessions.

Is Reiki safe?

Reiki is generally considered a gentle complementary therapy and is non-invasive. However, Reiki isn't appropriate as a replacement for medical, psychological or psychiatric assessment or treatment. If you have a health condition, are receiving treatment or have any concerns about whether Reiki is appropriate for you, please discuss this with your GP or relevant healthcare professional. If I have concerns about your wellbeing or whether Reiki is appropriate for you, I'll be honest about that too.

Can I have Reiki while I'm seeing a psychologist, counsellor or other healthcare professional?

Yes. Reiki can be received alongside appropriate medical, psychological or psychiatric care. It is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure medical or psychological conditions, and it does not replace the care provided by qualified healthcare professionals. If you're already working with a healthcare professional, Reiki can simply be one complementary part of how you look after yourself.

Is Reiki suitable if I'm experiencing significant mental health concerns?

Reiki may provide a quiet opportunity to relax, but it isn't a mental health treatment. If you're experiencing significant psychological distress, a mental health crisis or symptoms that require professional assessment, please seek appropriate support from a GP, psychologist, psychiatrist or mental health service. If you're unsure whether Reiki is appropriate for you at the moment, please contact me before booking so we can have a conversation.

Is everything I share with you confidential?

I treat the personal information you share with me respectfully and confidentially, in accordance with my privacy obligations. There are some circumstances where information may need to be disclosed where required or permitted by law. You can read more about how Stilling Minds collects, uses and protects your information in my Privacy Policy.

Can I ask questions before I book?

Absolutely. If you've never had Reiki before, it's completely understandable to have questions. I'd much rather you ask than book a session while feeling unsure about what to expect.

If there's something you're wondering about, get in touch.

What if I'm running late?

Please let me know as soon as you can. Because appointments are scheduled around other clients, arriving late may mean that your session needs to be shortened so that the next appointment can begin on time. I'll always do my best to accommodate you where possible.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Life happens. If you need to cancel or change your appointment, please give as much notice as possible. My cancellation and rescheduling arrangements are outlined in my Cancellation Policy.

Can I bring someone with me?

If you'd feel more comfortable having someone accompany you, please let me know when booking. For everyone's comfort and privacy, I'd prefer to discuss support-person arrangements with you before your appointment.

Is Stilling Minds inclusive?

Yes. Everyone is welcome at Stilling Minds. I welcome people of all backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, genders and identities. My intention is to provide a space where every person feels respected, safe and able to receive care without judgement.

However you arrive, you're welcome.
